March 13-19 is termite awareness week!
Why is it so important to be aware of termites?
Well in each year termites cost close to a billion dollars in damages to homes across America.
How does this happen you ask?
People unaware of what to look for or how to tell you have a termite problem to start off with. Most people wait for flying termites. Flying termites (or swarmers) are not the first sign there are termites in the home but they certainly do alarm you to the fact that termites are around.
Subterranean termites are the ones doing the real damage. So what should you be looking for? Well these are just some of the signs that may indicate termites:
- Cracks and bubbling of paint or behind wall paper
- Darkened wood structures
- Mud like tubes the termites create to get food
- Small piles of fecal matter, it looks like sawdust
- Soft or hallow sounding wood
If you are seeing any of the above described signs or swarmers you need to contact a licensed termite exterminator, termites are difficult to get rid of and wasting time and money is not something you should be doing at this time.
